Reflexology
History
Reflexology is a holistic treatment that has been practiced by many different cultures the world over. The earliest records of the treatment can be found in Egypt dating back to 2500 BC.
How reflexology works
The human body has natural healing abilities, for example, if skin is cut, a bone is broken, a muscle is torn or if it becomes ill, it will natural repair the skin, bone or muscle and fight off any infection. All the bodies systems work together to bring this healing about, and can only do this with clear energy pathways. If there are imbalances or blockages in the energy pathways, the performance of the systems can be compromised, and If left for prolonged periods of time, can lead to physical, physiological and emotional problems.
Reflexology aims to relax the client improve energy levels and pathways. This gives a sense of well-being, balances hormones and stabilises the metabolism.
These are all conditions required for homeostasis (equilibrium and stability) within the body.
The reflexology treatment
Following a comprehensive consultation you can get comfortable on the couch in either a seated or lying position. The atmosphere of the treatment room is quiet and relaxed with soft background music, warm blankets and a calming aromatherapy scent gently filling the treatment room.
Before the treatment begins, the reflexologist will cleanse the feet and apply a massage medium using a sequence calming massage movements. To further your relaxation you may be couched through some breathing exercises should you arrive feeling particularly stressed or anxious.
Starting with your right foot, the soft tissues are gently manipulated using varying degrees of pressure and techniques. This helps to improves the circulation allowing delivery of new oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, which are vital for both normal bodily function healing and homeostasis.
During your reflexology treatment you may feel or experience many different effects. I have had some clients experience some of the following:
Emotional, tired, happy, relaxed, vibrations and heat throughout the body, light headed, feeling of floating/levitating, restless legs, and even temporary removal of pain or discomfort. These effects can also last for a period of time following the treatment.
